Road freight underpins the UK economy, with almost 80% of all freight transported by road and the sector contributing approximately £12 billion annually. Supporting the continued growth and resilience of this industry is a key priority, and investment is being directed toward initiatives that strengthen the freight and road haulage sector. A central focus of this effort is improving facilities for HGV drivers, including enhanced welfare provision, better on site and driver security, and increased parking capacity and amenities. On 13 April 2022, the Department for Transport announced £20 million in government funding to support these improvements. This investment is being delivered through the Designated Funds programme, which operates separately from the core work of managing and developing England's strategic road network.
