Pharmac is running a simple competitive market process (ROI) for electronic and mechanical medical gas vaporisers used in Health New Zealand (“Health NZ”) hospitals. The purpose of this activity is to support a more consistent and transparent approach to the procurement of gas vaporisers, ensuring purchasing decisions are informed, comparable, and deliver public value across the public health system. Gas vaporisers are specialised medical devices that add a precise and controlled concentration of volatile anaesthetic agents (i.e., sevoflurane, desflurane, and isoflurane) to the fresh gas flow of an anaesthesia breathing circuit. These devices are clinically essential in a range of healthcare delivery settings. Given their importance, Pharmac sees value in focusing on a procurement process that would secure solutions that are clinically fit-for-purpose, cost-effective, and commercially sustainable over time. Pharmac is interested in procuring both mechanical and electronic vaporisers. Previously, gas vaporisers have been supplied as part of bundled arrangements linked to the anaesthetic agents. This opportunity seeks to establish arrangements specific to vaporisers, enabling clearer visibility of costs and a more consistent, transparent approach to sourcing them as a component of the anaesthesia ecosystem.
