The University of Otago is considering its future Marine Science capability to support long-term teaching, research and collaboration. Our existing principal research vessel Polaris II, is approaching the end of its service life, creating an opportunity to consider what future capability is required rather than simply replacing the existing vessel on a like-for-like basis. We are seeking information from the market to better understand what vessel and associated capability solutions are available or feasible, how different functional and operational requirements influence vessel configuration and cost, and the potential implications of different approaches to propulsion, scientific capability, passenger capacity, operating range, supporting infrastructure and delivery. We are particularly interested in understanding where meaningful capability improvements can be achieved efficiently, where significant cost or design thresholds arise, and what alternative approaches the market considers appropriate for our requirements.
